Agrifood: New Opportunities

Agrifood: New Opportunities

Utilising the initiative of Australia’s Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) with Japan which began last year, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is dispatching a mission to Northern Australia focussing on potential investment opportunities there. The mission is to evaluate using Australia for farming, processing and productionfor supply into Asian markets including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The mission will kick-off on 29 Feb 2016 by visiting Darwin before moving to Cairns, Townsville and Brisbane. Japan’s prestigious Nomura Research Institute has been tasked with providing planning and logistical support for the mission as well as the post mission analysis of opportunities. The mission to Australia follows on from a mission of Japanese companies to Thailand and Indonesia last month, Jan 2016, which was also part of this MAFF program. The aim of that mission was to look at the demand side including distribution channels and retailers,l import barriers and regulations; and issues such as Halal food requirements.
