Future Business Counterparts from Australia
On 22nd October 2007, Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda of Japan at the 45th Japan-Australia Joint Business Conference in Tokyo, the fiftieth anniversary year of the ‘Milestone’ Australia-Japan Agreement on Commerce of 1957, announced :
“It is important to nurture young generations who will support the future of our relationship. From this perspective, the Government of Japan will start from next year to invite to Japan about fifty young professionals, namely from the business community, who we hope will uphold our future partnership, thereby promoting mutual understanding.”
The AJBCC has been most supportive of this generous invitation programme by the Government of Japan. There have been ten day programmes of briefings, visits and cultural experiences held annually in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The counterpart JABCC has been the key designer and organiser of the business dimensions of the ten day visit programme.
A fifth, and prospectively the final programme, will take place in February 2012. At the conclusion of this fifth programme more than 240 young Australian professionals will have had the opportunity to receive a guided introduction to the government of Japan, its economy and its business practices as well as being introduced to various elements of Japan’s culture. The AJBCC expresses its gratitude to all who have made the five programmes so beneficial to the participants.
The Seventh Australia-Japan Conference
Since April 2001, the Governments of Australia and Japan have periodically invited small groups to reflect on how the bilateral relationship might be improved. Dimensions considered have included such matters as the political and security, the economic and trade, the scientific and the people-to-people links. The Seventh Australia-Japan Conference was held in Brisbane at the beginning of November, 2011. Sir Rod Eddington, Chairman Australia New Zealand JP Morgan, Chairman of Infrastructure Australia and President of the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC) and Mr Akio Mimura, Chairman of Nippon Steel Corporation and the Chairman of the Japan Australia Business Co-operation Committee (JABCC) were invited by the governments to be the Co-Chairs of the conference.
