Membership
The Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC) is an active group of top Australian business persons that has developed over 49 years into one of the most valuable elements in strengthening Australia-Japan ties.
Membership of the AJBCC is corporate. The annual membership subscription is based on annual turnover of the member organisation. The AJBCC and its JABCC counterpart seek to establish closer ties between the businesses of both countries, to promote and facilitate trade relations and to break down barriers to understanding.
The annual joint business conference, which alternates between the two countries in the month of October, is the major event of the calendar year. Its programme aims to be relevant to the daily working life of the delegates through the topic matter of the conference’s plenary sessions. Typically the programme is not restricted to the bilateral dimension alone but recognises the dynamic environment –economic, political, security - of the Asian region and also the global issues, such as ‘Climate Change’ issues.
The AJBCC has an ‘Infrastructure Initiative’ which has determined that there are significant complementarities in ‘provision’, ‘operation’ and financing’ of infrastructure in Australia and Japan that it warrants the AJBCC and JABCC to encourage joint venturing for work in Australia, in Japan, and in third countries – see separate report under ‘Activities’.
The AJBCC also takes the opportunity of visits to Australia of significant individuals in the commercial or political context to organise small scale Dinners, Lunches or seminars for the membership. The AJBCC also supports the initiatives of other organisations that are perceived to be of interest to the work life of Members.
Close attention is also given to developing and fostering cultural relations. For instance, in the past in conjunction with the Australia Japan Foundation, the Committee has funded English language teaching programmes for Japanese language professionals who train other Japanese in the skills and methods of English language teaching. At an earlier time the Committee conducted an exchange programme between younger business people.
